SENIOR ROTATIONAL COURSES 

Senior Rotation is a one-day per week course, which allows senior students the opportunity to experience course material beyond the scope of the present curriculum. These courses are specialty courses that are directly related to their major course of study. Topics are given a time commitment of one term. This scheduling allows flexibility so that new industry related materials can be delivered to these students as they are preparing to graduate

 

 ANIMAL SCIENCE ROTATIONAL COURSES


Advanced Aviculture 748 1

This course concentrates on examining different types of exotic birds. A thorough review of their environment and habits in the natural world, as well as their care and management as pets, will be presented. Wing clipping, debeaking, handling, and feeding techniques will be taught.


Clinical Skills for Dogs and Cats 748 1

This course is designed for the pet owner to understand health issues, caring for pets on day-to-day basis, and monitoring illness. This course will introduce students to how to care for animals in emergency and first aid situations. A home reference booklet will be completed as a class project.


Advanced Reptiles 748 1

This course will be a continuation of the Introduction to Reptiles. Proper housing, nutrition, care, and reproduction will be covered.


Alternative Careers in Agriculture 748 1

This course is designed to help students explore the many career options available to them that are related to their present course of study. We will be discussing different types of careers that may vary in some degree from what they are studying but do in fact deal with the field of animal science. Guest lecturers will be used in this class to show the diversity of this field and to give students some instruction as to how to gear their future studies towards their career goals. Field trips to various facilities will also be used to explore new alternatives.


Equine Disciplines 748 1

This course is an in depth study of some of the major equine disciplines, including both riding and driving. Topics would include hunt seat, saddle seat, western riding and driving, as well as dressage (the focus of riding here at school). The thoroughbred and standard bred racing industries will also be addressed. Lecture, research, guest speakers, demonstration, and field trips will give students a look at the varied equine disciplines in the area. 


Equine Medicine and Alternative Therapies 748 1

This course will introduce students to the ever changing subject of equine medicine. Topics to be discussed include sports medicine and treatments for the equine athlete. Care of the brood mare and neonatal care of distressed foals are taught. Additional topics will include new treatments for old problems such as founder, heaves, colic and lameness.

 

PLANT SCIENCE & ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE  COURSES

Dried and Preserved Flowers 748 1

This course is for both the beginner who has little or no floral design ability as well as for those who have had extensive training. It will combine the basics of design with the exciting medium of dried flowers. Drying, pressing, and a variety of uses of dried flowers will be explored.


Thematic Approach to Design 748 1

Students will choose the theme of the weekly design and create the material and supplies list to support their theme. The experience of planning and follow through will be the focus of this class.


Thematic Approach to Holiday Design 748 1

This course is designed to incorporate the spirit of the holiday season and floral designs specifically associated with Christmas. The traditional wreath, Christmas trees, kissing balls, and centerpieces will be made with a variety of plant materials and decorations. Color, balance, and creativity will be stressed.


Japanese and European Design 748 1

The influences of many cultures have trickled down in to American floral design. We will explore the roots of these two influences and create some of these traditional designs.


Sports Turf 748 1

This topic introduces the Horticulture student to the growing industry of sports turf management. Lessons will be geared towards turf as a " playing surface" and not just for aesthetic purposes as with lawns. Construction and maintenance of golf courses and athletic fields will be studied in detail. Field trips to local sports facilities are a major part of the course material.


Landscape Equipment Operation 748 1 

This course allows the student the opportunity to operate larger equipment used in landscape operations. Students will learn identification of parts, safety standards, and the requirements for obtaining a hydraulics license. Front end loaders, skid drive loaders, backhoes, and one ton dump trucks will be used to develop safe operation habits while allowing students the experience to handle equipment common to landscape construction.


Water Gardening 748 1

This course gives the student experience in designing, constructing, and maintaining components in the ever growing and popular area of water gardening. Plant materials and equipment used in this area of landscaping are specific to water gardening and will be given very detailed attention. Class visits to local companies involved with water gardening and guest speakers will be part of the course material.


Interior Landscaping 748 1

Interior landscaping is a specialized field of Horticulture available to our students entering the work environment. Attention will be given to the design, construction, and maintenance of interior landscapes. A study of the plants and materials used in this field will be a major part of the course. Visits to local foliage plant nurseries, and interior landscape sites will give students an opportunity to see the materials and plants in production and in use in the "landscape".


Water Resource Management 748 1

This course will explore the ground water / surface water relationship and the physical / chemical considerations to manage this vital resource. Students will be given an in-depth understanding of how drinking water and wastewater are treated.


Outdoor Safety and First-Aid 748 1 

Students will learn basic outdoor safety and first-aid skills that may be needed in outdoor related situations. The viewpoint that Emergency Medical Technicians may be hours away and that the environment will play a large factor in successful treatment.

Air Quality Management 748 1

This course will cover the environmental effects and health hazards associated with air pollution. Local and global considerations in air resource management will be explored. The characteristics and health hazards of indoor &outdoor air pollutants will be investigated.


Nature Photography 748 1 

This course will cover the basics of photography; equipment, lighting, composition, and film. Photographing plants and animals, especially in their natural environment, will be the focus of this class.
