SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 Biology I (Grade 9) 4111,4112

This course introduces students to the study of biological sciences and the specific terminology and methodology relating to the basic concepts of life and its processes.  Topics studied will include scientific method, cell structure and function, basic biochemistry and genetics.  A required, individual, experimental project is an integral part of this course.

Biology II (Grade10) 4211,4212,4213*

As a continuation of Biology I, this course focuses on ecology, biodiversity and human anatomy.  The development of simple and complex systems in the invertebrate and vertebrate animals will be studied and compared.  Students will continue to develop inquiry and analytical skills. A required, individual, experimental project is an integral part of the course.

Chemistry (Grade11) 4311,4313*

This course introduces the fundamental terms of Chemistry including metric measurement and the basic classification system for matter.  Topics include the nomenclature of chemistry from elemental symbols to compounds and formulas. An emphasis is placed on laboratory skills and experiences as students explore chemical and physical properties of matter, bond types, effects of solutes and chemical reactions.

Chemical Science          (Grade11) 4312

This course is designed to introduce the basic concepts of chemistry to students.  This hands-on approach utilizes laboratory skills and practice to reinforce concepts that are discussed in class.  These concepts include, but are not limited to; atomic structure and bonding, chemical and physical properties and reactions, effect of solutes on solutions and electron configuration.

Physics (Grade 12) 4411, 4413*
This course is designed to introduce and strengthen key concepts of physics concerning the relationship between matter and energy, velocity and acceleration, Newton’s Laws of Motion, universal gravitation and the nature of sound.  Measurement, problem solving and critical thinking are also covered including the techniques used in interpreting data, equations and graphs with
emphasis on vector analysis.

Environmental Issues (Grade 12) 4412
This course is designed to address major environmental issues such as global warming, nuclear energy and fuel disposal, alternative fuel systems and toxic waste, that confront our society and ecosystem and to explore the options and progress in solving environmental problems. Connections to national politics, current issues and world politics will be made.  Current publications, the Internet and laboratory experiences will be utilized to reinforce issues discussed.
