Descriptions
Mathematics Department Algebra I
(Grade 9) 2113*, 2112, 2111
This
course demonstrates the usefulness and realistic context for the symbols of
algebra focusing on the use of algebra as a problem-solving tool in our daily
lives. Real life application projects emphasize problem solving, critical
thinking skills, communication, and making connections. This course focuses on
the standard topics of Algebra: signed numbers, exponents and roots,
scientific notation, solutions from one unknown, graphing and solving complex
word problems. Strategies for checking answers and factoring are also
developed. Practice with multiple choice, short answer, and open response
questions reinforce and maintain standardized test–taking skills. Basic
statistics and probability will be introduced. Geometry (Grade 10) 2213*, 2212, 2211 This
course demonstrates the useful application of geometric theorems and
postulates to solving problems in real life situations. Topics include the
properties of: lines, points, planes and geometric figures, angles, congruence
and similarities of figures and parallel lines. Other topics are: plotting on
the Cartesian coordinate system, slopes, axes of symmetry, and rotations and
translations. Trigonometric applications of the Pythagorean theorem and the
laws of sines and cosines are included. Practice with multiple choice,
short answer, and open response questions reinforce and maintain standardized
testing skills. Algebra II (Grade 11) 2311 This
year long course is a continuation of the algebraic concepts in Algebra I. It
will emphasize the connection between algebra and geometry and introduce
trigonometry. Topics include linear equations and inequalities, linear
systems, functions and inverses, coordinate geometry, and factoring.
Polynomial functions, conic sections, and basic trigonometry are also covered. Prerequisites:
Successful completion of Algebra I and Geometry. Business Mathematics I (Grade 11) 2312 This
year-long course focuses on skills needed to manage personal finances. Topics
include personal income, record keeping, personal banking, and investments.
Consumer skills such as cash/credit purchases, loans for housing and autos,
and insurance will also be covered. MCAS
Mathematics (Grade 11) Students
taking this semester course will focus on review of math skills and functions.
The following learning standards will be emphasized: Number Sense, Patterns,
Functions, Geometry and Measurement, Statistics and Probability. Upon
successfully passing the MCAS test, students will then enter the Business Math
class. Algebra II with Trigonometry (Grade11 or 12) 2313* 2411 This year long course is a continuation of algebraic concepts from Algebra 1. It will emphasize the connection between algebra and geometry and introduce trigonometry. The focus of this course is the application of linear systems, functions, inverses and factoring of polynomials to real life situations. Exponential/logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions and trigonometric identities will also be applied to real life situations. Business Mathematics II (Grade12) 2412 This
year long course focuses on skills needed to operate a small business. The
topics of study include banking, payroll, budgeting, purchasing, sales and
marketing. Credit, inventory, accounting and investments will be further
explored. Pre-Calculus
(Grade12) 2413*
This
full year Pre-calculus course relates the connections between the fundamental
concepts of algebra, trigonometry, and analytic geometry. Some topics covered
are polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric
functions and their graphs. Further topics are analytic trigonometry, vectors
and matrices. * designates an honors course | |||||||
