School Policy for Food and Beverages Served and Sold During the School Day

Offer foods and beverages, over the course of a school week, which should be nutrient-dense, including whole grain products and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables to provide students a variety of choices to maintain a balanced diet. Make  available foods and beverages, during the school day, which minimize the use of trans and saturated fats and sugar as defined by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.  Make food providers aware that they should offer modest portion sizes appropriate for high school students. Include a variety of choices of nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grain and low-fat dairy foods if a la carte food line is available. Offer nutrition information for products in snack bars, a la carte and make them available at the product display. Require that beverages not covered by the National School Lunch Program will comply with the following
Only the following types of beverages will be sold: (a) At least fifty-percent fruit juices or vegetable based drinks that have no added natural or artificial sweetener in not more than 12 ounce containers,  (b) Drinking water, in any size container, (c) Low fat and non-fat milk, including but not limited to low fat and non-fat chocolate milk, soymilk and or rice milk and other similar dairy or non-dairy milk, in not more than 16 ounce containers. Soy and rice drinks must be calcium and vitamin fortified and no more than 30 grams total sugars.  Reinforce the importance of healthy choices in classroom snacks.

Food Service Operation Goals

Provide as assurance that guidelines for reimbursable school meals shall not be less restrictive than regulations issued by the Secretary of Agriculture pursuant to subsections (a) and (b) of sections 10 of the Child Nutrition Act (42 U.S.C. 1779) and section 9 (f91) and 17 (a) pf the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C. 11758 (f) (1), 1766 (a) as those regulations apply to school. Serve foods to students that comply with all the state and local food safety regulations and that Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point plans and guidelines are implemented to prevent food borne illness in schools .Develop a pricing plan to ensure maximum participation in the school meal program, and should ensure that all eligible children qualify and receive free and reduced price meals. Employ a Food Service Director to administer the school food service program and satisfy district and state reporting requirements. Train all food service personnel and require them ongoing professional development. Have school food service providers adopt methods of cooking that decrease fat, calorie, and sodium levels in food. Plan menus that will meet the nutrition standards in the Dietary Guidelines.Ensure that required and effective food safety practices are applied to all foods prepared, sold or served at school or school-sponsored events.
