The Plant Science department offers a wide variety of courses within its curriculum. All students enrolled in a Plant Science field of study are eligible to obtain certificates of competency in their selected majors.
During their sophomore year, students receive an introduction to floral design, landscape operations, plant propagation, landscape equipment operation, tree identification, greenhouse production, equipment maintenance, and wildlife ecology. Near the end of their sophomore year, Plant Science students will apply for one of three concentrations.
Students who major in the Greenhouse Management/Floriculture concentration will be taught those skills necessary for a successful career as a florist, floral designer or greenhouse operator.
Landscape/Arboriculture majors at Essex Aggie concentrate on landscaping skills, developing competencies in turf management, landscape design, construction, and maintenance.
Natural Resources/Park Management majors concentrate on the forestry and ecology skills necessary to develop competency in this field.
